Nigerian lawmaker sentenced to jail in England after being caught in a lie

British born Nigerian lawmaker, Fiona Onasanya has been sentenced to 3 months in jail after she was caught in lie trying to avoid justice in England.

The Labour Member of Parliament for Peterborough, was caught driving at 41mph in a 30mph zone in her constituency.

When caught, Onasanya tried to outsmart the Police by colluding with her brother Festus to avoid the speeding ticket. They named Aleks Antipow(a friend of Festus) as the driver.

The lie was soon discovered as Antipow was hundred of miles away visiting parents in Russia when the event occurred. 

Festus, 34, from Cambridge, pleaded guilty to counts of perverting the course of justice and over speeding. 

In the wake of the guilty verdict, Onasanya was expelled from the Labour Party and has launched an appeal against her conviction.

Fiona Onasanya, 35, was jailed for three months while her brother was given a 10-month sentence by judge Mr Justice Stuart-Smith.

He said:

‘It’s a tragedy that you have found yourselves here and in this predicament but it’s a tragedy that you have brought on yourselves.’

‘If she wasn’t an MP or wasn’t in a position of responsibility, she would go inside. It’s not one law for those in a position of power, and another for those who are not.’
