Kwankwaso Speaks On Working For Tinubu In NDC
Former Kano State governor and ex-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has dismissed claims that he is secretly working President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Kwankwaso spoke during an interview with Global TV on Wednesday night, where he reacted to allegations that he was backing Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
According to him, the claims were false and similar rumours had followed him since his time in the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
The former Minister of Defence said his political focus remains with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), adding that his friendship with Tinubu should not be mistaken for political cooperation.
He explained that both men have separate political paths and ideologies despite their long relationship.
He said, “I think only foolish people would believe that. We are not working for anybody. We are only working for NDC.
“Bola Tinubu has been my senior brother and good friend up till now. But that doesn’t mean we shall pull all our political ideologies together with him.
“He is doing his own, and I am doing my own.”
His reaction followed comments made by Sanusi Bature, who alleged that Kwankwaso had worked for Tinubu during the 2023 election and recently attempted to arrange a direct meeting with the President.
Kwankwaso also spoke about the current state of the country and said he believes the President may not be fully aware of the real situation Nigerians are facing.
He blamed people around the President for failing to give him accurate information about happenings across the country.
According to him, many of those close to the President are more interested in political control and the movement of governors into the ruling All Progressives Congress rather than telling him the truth about public concerns.
Speaking further, Kwankwaso explained why his political camp decided to support former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, within the NDC coalition.
He said leaders from the six geopolitical zones held meetings after joining the NDC on May 3 and agreed to work together under one political family.
He stated that after the party decided to zone the presidential ticket to the South, members considered different options before settling on Obi as their preferred candidate.
Kwankwaso said the coalition still has enough time before the 2027 election to reach more Nigerians and build support across the country.
He added that the group is already working hard to convince voters and counter what he described as false narratives being spread for political gain.
The former Kano governor also avoided directly describing himself as popular in the North, saying it is left for Nigerians to judge his political strength.
He maintained that the coalition would continue engaging voters across regions as preparations for the election continue.
