House of Reps Speaker sacks committee

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has dissolved all ad hoc committees of the 10th Assembly.

The decision was communicated to members through a memo signed by the Clerk of the House, Sidi Ibrahim.

The directive covers the ad hoc committee led by Yusuf Gagdi, which was investigating issues linked to the inclusion of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), as well as other temporary committees created by the House.

The House said the dissolution followed earlier instructions given to the committees to complete their assignments and submit their reports within the time allowed under the Standing Orders.

According to the directive, only two of the committees had requested and received additional time to complete their work.

The two-week extension granted to the committees had already expired before the latest decision was taken.

The House explained that ad hoc committees are created to handle specific issues for a limited period and are expected to end once their assignments are completed or the period approved for their work expires.

The decision was also based on the provisions of the House Standing Orders concerning the time allowed for committees to submit their reports.

Committees that fail to meet the approved deadline cannot continue operating indefinitely without further approval.

With the dissolution taking effect from Friday, August 28, all activities being conducted under the name of the affected ad hoc committees are expected to stop immediately.

Chairmen of the dissolved committees have also been directed to submit any outstanding reports, working papers, records and other documents connected to their assignments to the Office of the Clerk of the House.

The documents will be kept by the Clerk’s office as part of the official records of the House.
