Major shakeup as Nigerian Army appoints new leaders


The Nigerian Army on Wednesday carried out a major reshuffle of its senior officers, moving several generals and brigadier generals to new command, operational and administrative positions across the Service.

The changes were approved by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, as part of efforts to improve the Army’s operations.

One of the major changes is the appointment of Major General IA Ajose as the new Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI.

He was moved from the Department of Army Operations at Army Headquarters to take charge of the theatre responsible for military operations against insurgency in the North-East.

Major General AE Abubakar, who previously served with Operation HADIN KAI, has been transferred to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, where he will serve as Dean of the Faculty of Operational Research.

Major General AM Alechenu has also been posted to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre from the Defence Headquarters Garrison.

At the same time, Major General RT Utsaha has moved from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Standards and Evaluation to the Defence Headquarters Garrison, where he will serve as Commander.

Major General AM Umar has been transferred from the Army Headquarters Department of Civil-Military Affairs to the Army War College Nigeria as Commandant. His position at the Department of Civil-Military Affairs will now be occupied by Major General UM Alkali, who is moving from the Army War College.

Another major appointment involves Major General GS Muhammed, who has been moved from the Office of the National Security Adviser to the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation as Director General.

Major General JE Osifo has also left the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation for the Military Pension Board, where he will serve as Chairman.

In another posting, Major General IE Ekpenyong has been redeployed to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Logistics as Director of Engineering Services.

The reshuffle also affects several brigadier generals serving in operational and command positions.

Brigadier General AA Bello has been moved from the 6 Division Garrison/Sector 3 Joint Task Force South-South, Operation DELTA SAFE, to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Operations.

Brigadier General MS Adamu has been transferred from the Nigerian Army Women Command to the newly established 8 Brigade, where he will serve as Commander.

Brigadier General MS Sule has also been appointed Commander of the 27 Task Force Brigade after his redeployment from the Special Task Force, Operation ENDURING PEACE.

Brigadier General I Sule has been moved from the Directorate of Recruitment Management to the 6 Division Garrison as Commander.

The Army has also appointed Brigadier General E Azenda as Commander of the 2 Division Garrison following his redeployment from the Land Forces Simulation Centre.

His former position at the simulation centre will now be occupied by Brigadier General AS Bugaje, who is moving from the 2 Division Garrison to become Director of Administration.

The Chief of Army Staff directed the newly posted officers to approach their new responsibilities with professionalism and a strong sense of duty.
