Manchester United youngster JJ Gabriel has emerged as one of the most talked-about teenagers in English football after informing the club of his desire to leave Old Trafford.
The 15-year-old has been regarded as one of the most promising players to emerge from United’s academy in recent years, but his future at the club has suddenly become uncertain.
Gabriel has reportedly asked for his registration with United to be cancelled, a move that could allow him to become a free agent if the relevant parties agree.
His decision comes at a particularly significant moment in his development. Gabriel had been expected to be part of Michael Carrick’s squad for United’s Carabao Cup third-round meeting with Brighton, potentially allowing him to become the club’s youngest-ever player in a competitive fixture. However, his request to leave disrupted those plans.
The teenager has already had a taste of first-team football. During United’s pre-season campaign, he came on as a substitute against Atletico Madrid and played eight minutes as a forward. The appearance made him the youngest player to represent the club in a non-competitive match.
Gabriel’s desire to seek a new challenge has reportedly been influenced, at least in part, by his limited pre-season opportunities after that cameo.
From London prodigy to United prospect
Born and raised in London, Gabriel has spent time within the academies of several prominent English clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers.
His reputation began to grow at a remarkably young age. At eight, his football skills featured in a viral YouTube video, earning him the nickname “Kid Messi” and bringing considerable attention to his ability.
United eventually secured his services when he was 11, and his development at the club has subsequently accelerated.
Last season proved particularly impressive. Gabriel scored more than 20 goals for United’s Under-18 side and became the youngest recipient of the club’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award. His performances also earned him the Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season accolade.
Primarily deployed on the left wing or as a No. 10, Gabriel is valued for his attacking ability and goalscoring threat.
He has continued to attract attention this season. Rather than featuring in United’s opening Champions League fixture against Sabah, he played in the corresponding UEFA Youth League match and responded with a hat-trick during a 5-0 victory.
Why is Gabriel’s future attracting so much attention?
United’s current situation is significant because Gabriel has already attracted interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich have previously been linked with the teenager, while Manchester City also reportedly had an opportunity to sign him last summer, but Gabriel chose to remain at United after receiving assurances regarding his development pathway.
His potential availability could therefore generate considerable interest if he ultimately succeeds in leaving Old Trafford.
United, however, have not accepted that his departure is inevitable. The club reportedly believes the situation can still be resolved and hopes to convince the teenager to remain.
Carrick has previously described Gabriel as “a really big talent”, while former United great Ryan Giggs has labelled him a “generational talent”.
Gabriel is also an England youth international and has represented the country at several age-group levels. Away from the pitch, he has a long-term sponsorship agreement with Nike.
What happens next?
Gabriel’s age is an important factor in determining what happens to his career.
Premier League regulations mean his youth registration cannot simply be cancelled at the player’s request. The club, the player and his parent or carer must reach an agreement. If they cannot do so, the Premier League can make a binding decision.
Gabriel is due to turn 16 on 6 October. Until then, he cannot sign a scholarship agreement with United, while a professional contract cannot be signed until he reaches 17.
The teenager has also removed United-related posts and content from his Instagram account, adding another indication that his relationship with the club is currently uncertain.
