Benue state lawmakers seen scaling fence to enter assembly complex(video)

There was drama at the benue state house of assembly this morning as some members of the house were seen flying over the fence to gain access in to the assembly complex in a bid to hold a parliamentary sitting.

According to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports, the impeached speaker, Mr Terkimbi Ikyange (APC) and his successor, Mr Titus Ubah, (APC) were at the premises arguing about who is has the right to the position, when supporters of both sides forced their way into the building through the high wall. Both groups were, however, prevented from gaining entry into the main lobby of the complex to hold their meetings.

Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Moses Yamu, proved abortive as he refused to either answer calls to his telephone line or reply text messages sent to him on the matter.

Recall that on july 24 of this month Mr ikyange, speaker of the benue state house of assembly was impeached by 21 out of the 30 members of the house in an emergency sitting.

However while speaking to NAN, he maintained that he still remains the rightful speaker of the house since due process was not followed in his impeachment, and since the house is under adjornement only two principal officers can reconvene it, the speaker and his deputy.

He said none of the two officers reconvened the assembly. On the other hand, lawmakers loyal to the new speaker quoted the Standing Rules of the House to justify their action.

They claimed that in the absence of the two presiding officers, they could elect a pro-tempo speaker to preside over the sitting.
