In Delta State, some former members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who followed Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been reluctant to officially resign from the PDP but still want to register as APC members.
This situation caused confusion, as local APC leaders initially refused to register them without resignation letters.
However, the APC leadership in the state later directed ward and local government officials to register all new members without any conditions.
Despite this, reports suggest that many of the defectors are hesitant and not eager to register right away, with some observing the situation cautiously due to the strained relationship between the two parties.
Meanwhile, the PDP, led by South-South Zonal Chairman Emmanuel Ogidi, is trying to rebuild and has started reorganizing its structure, with plans to set up a new caretaker committee within a month.
The mass defection of the PDP leaders, including the Governor, was described as a “movement” rather than just a defection, with the Governor stating the need to support the current president and align with his agenda.
Though the PDP threatened legal action to challenge the defections and reclaim its seats, no lawsuit has been filed yet.
A party official said preparations are ongoing, but delays were caused by the public holiday and the absence of follow-up meetings.
For now, the legal battle is focused solely on Delta State.
