The Federal Government has announced preparations for the 2025 Democracy Day by forming a committee to oversee the celebration.
Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, was appointed as the chairman of the committee, though he was represented at the committee’s inauguration by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu.
Bagudu explained that Democracy Day is more than a public holiday; it’s a chance for the government to state its achievements and reinforce its commitment to democratic values.
He urged the committee to align their efforts with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Several activities have been scheduled in honour of the celebration.
These include a World Press Briefing and Juma’at Service on Friday, June 6th; a Church Service on Sunday, June 8th; a Youth Programme on Tuesday, June 9th; a Public Lecture on Wednesday, June 11th; and the grand finale on Thursday, June 12th, featuring a Presidential Broadcast and Parade.
Other committee members include key government figures such as the Ministers of Finance, Information, Foreign Affairs, the FCT, and Interior.
Also on the list are the Inspector-General of Police, the DSS Director-General, the Commander of the Guards Brigade, and various permanent secretaries, with Engr. Nadungu Gagare serving as the committee’s secretary.
