The Federal Government has announced that Thursday, June 12, 2025, will be observed as a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day.
The decision was made public on Sunday through a statement from the Ministry of Interior in Abuja.
This holiday follows another earlier in the same week, as Monday, June 9, was set aside for the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The Ministry of Interior confirmed that the Democracy Day holiday was approved by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the declaration on behalf of the federal government.
June 12 has been set aside to remember Nigeria’s progress since the return to democratic rule and to honour the values that continue to guide the nation’s political journey.
The date serves as a reminder of the efforts made to build a country where fairness, peace, and unity are central to governance.
The federal government also used the occasion to express its belief in the continued growth of Nigeria’s democracy.
Under the current administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the government said it remains dedicated to maintaining democratic principles, including allowing citizens to have a say in how the country is run.
