South African singer Tyla has won the Best Afrobeats category at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) with her hit single “Push 2 Start.”
The awards ceremony, held on Sunday night in New York, celebrated global music stars with the presentation of the iconic “Moon Person” trophies.
Tyla’s win came in one of the night’s most competitive categories, where she triumphed over Nigerian Afrobeats powerhouses Asake, Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, and Wizkid.
The victory, announced early Monday, marks a significant milestone for the 22-year-old star and highlights the growing influence of African music on the global stage.
This year’s VMAs also featured nominations for several African artists across multiple categories, with Nigerian acts including Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, and Rema recognized for their international impact.
