Three people have been arrested after a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, was found dead in a hotel room following an alleged visit by a 21-year-old sex worker.
This was disclosed by the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, who said the incident was reported to the police at about 8pm on October 5, 2026.
Ikoedem said Uwuigbe had lodged at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma and engaged the services of Angela Defa Jacob. She said the lecturer later sent Jacob to buy water, but she returned to find him lying dead in the room.
“On October 5, 2026, at about 8pm, the command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob.
“He subsequently sent the woman to purchase water for him, and upon her return, she found him lying dead in the room,” Ikoedem said.
The police spokesperson identified the three people in custody as the hotel owner, manager and Jacob, adding that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death were ongoing.
She said Uwuigbe’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, AAU’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of staff but said the incident occurred outside the university.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life.
“The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.
