Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has withdrawn the senatorial contest for the Federal Capital Territory under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Her withdrawal came after the party decided not to hold primary elections for the senatorial seat in the FCT.
The party said it will only go ahead with primaries for House of Representatives candidates in the territory, leaving the senatorial ticket without a contest process for now.
Yesufu, who joined the race after moving from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC, explained that the development made it impossible for her candidacy to continue under the current arrangement.
Her entry into the race had earlier drawn attention from supporters and political observers who saw her as a strong voice in the contest.
Following her exit, she called on her supporters to remain steady and not lose focus.
She urged them to keep attention on the wider political direction ahead of the 2027 elections, especially the presidential race, which she described as the main focus going forward.
She also expressed gratitude to those who supported her campaign structure, including members of the group that backed her senatorial ambition.
She appreciated their involvement and commitment during the period of her political engagement.
Yesufu further stated that she plans to visit the six area councils in the FCT in the coming days.
According to her, the visits will be to thank residents for their support and to continue discussions with communities on issues affecting the capital territory.
There has also been rumours within political circles that the Nigeria Democratic Congress may be backing another aspirant for the senatorial position, though the party has not made any formal announcement regarding that claim.
