The Adeleke Campaign Council has raised concerns over the reported presence of armed security personnel around the residence of the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, on Saturday, August 15, during the state governorship election.
The campaign council, through its spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, alleged that more than 10 black Hilux vehicles carrying armed personnel arrived at the Speaker’s residence and took positions around the property.
According to the council, the residence was reportedly sealed off, while people inside were allegedly prevented from leaving the premises.
The campaign team said it was unable to establish the reason for the security operation or determine whether the personnel were deployed to provide protection or were carrying out another official assignment.
The council called on the relevant security authorities to explain the development and clarify why movement around the Speaker’s residence was reportedly restricted on election day.
Olajengbesi also disclosed that attempts were made to contact the Commissioner of Police responsible for election security in Osun State and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police overseeing the election, but the efforts were unsuccessful.
He further said the campaign council tried to reach the Police Situation Room but could not get through.
According to him, the telephone number made available to the public was switched off at the time of the calls.
The Adeleke campaign team urged security agencies to conduct their activities in a manner that would not create fear among voters or raise concerns about intimidation during the election.
The council also appealed to residents of Osun State to remain calm and peaceful while waiting for an official explanation from the authorities.
It said residents should be allowed to move freely and participate in the election without fear, pressure or interference.
The development came as voters across Osun State went to the polls to elect the next governor, making the reported security presence around the Speaker’s residence a matter of concern for the campaign council.
The council maintained that security operations during the election should protect voters and electoral officials while also allowing residents to exercise their voting rights peacefully.
