Breaking: ASUU suspends strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its 3-month-old nationwide strike.

This announcement was made by the president of the association, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi after a just-concluded meeting with the federal government in Abuja which started at about 3 pm today.

The union directed university lecturers to resume duty from tomorrow, February 12.

The government delegation was led by labor minister, Chris Ngige, and the ASUU delegation was led by its president, Abiodun Ogunyemi.

At the meeting, a memorandum of action was signed by the two parties.

Mr Ngige had earlier said the government had resolved the eight contentious issues that led to the strike. He said some of the items have been implemented.

Mr Ngige said the union agreed with the government that N25 billion naira will be released for the revitalization of public universities.

He said visitation panels have been constituted and will commence work on March 2.

A majority of the members of the Union had earlier voted for the strike to continue as they were unable to trust the Federal Government would fulfill its promises.

The Union and the Government have been at loggerheads for about 3 months now with the Union seeking payment of owed funds.

The Union also announced the suspension of the strike via its official twitter handle, telling students that the strike was just suspended and not officially called off. They added that if the Federal Government did not fulfill their promise, the strike would resume immediately.
