A Rivers State High Court has barred the state executives of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), led by Aaron Chukwuemeka, from functioning as the party’s leadership.
Justice Stephen Jumbo issued the ruling on Monday through an interlocutory injunction.
The case was brought by Edwin Woko, Love Otuonye, and two other PDP members against the party’s National Chairman, State Chairman, and others.
They asked the court to void the congresses conducted in July and August 2024 in all 319 wards and 23 local government areas, claiming they violated a court order issued on July 16, 2024.
The court order had directed the PDP, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and their agents to halt all congresses until a pending case was resolved.
The claimants argued that the party ignored the directive.
This development follows a similar ruling last year that invalidated the ward, local government, and state executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State.
Observers believe this could impact FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who is in a political tussle with Governor Siminalayi Fubara in the state.
