Cross River assembly suspends LG chairman

The Cross River State House of Assembly on Wednesday suspended Ms. Theresa Ushie, the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council, for three months.

The suspension follows allegations of corruption, misconduct, and abuse of power raised against her.

The decision came after the Bekwarra Local Government Council Legislative Assembly passed a resolution requesting action against the chairman.

Earlier attempts to remove her from office were made three months ago, but this suspension is the first formal measure by the state assembly.

A committee has been formed to carry out a detailed investigation into the accusations facing Ms. Ushie.

During the suspension period, Mr. Egbung Odama, the Vice Chairman, will serve as acting chairman and manage council affairs.

The Speaker of the House, Mr. Elvert Ayambem, explained that the suspension aligns with Section 14(3) of the Cross River Local Government Laws, 2025.

He also called on the investigative committee to conduct a fair and thorough review of the situation.
