Explosion rocks Port-Harcourt

An explosion on Friday plunged some areas in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, into darkness, Punch reports.

The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company said the explosion occurred at the Woji Injection Substation, affecting the 33kv control panel.

The impact of the explosion is currently affecting customers in Woji, Ogbatai, Nvigwe and other areas feeding from the ISS, the PHED said.

“Esteemed customers, kindly be informed that there was an explosion at the Woji Injection Sub-station (ISS) and as a result, the 33kv control panel was affected.

“Customers in Woji, Ogbatai, Nvigwe and others feeding from the ISS are currently out of supply.

“We assure customers within the area that supply will be restored as soon as work is completed. We sincerely apologise for all the inconvenience,” the PHED disclosed in a statement.

An official of the PHED who spoke to our correspondent in a telephone conversation on Saturday said she could not explain the cause of the explosion.

Meanwhile, the Port Harcourt DisCos had earlier apologised to its customers over low power outages across its franchise.

“We deeply apologise for the current limited supply you are experiencing. This is a result of the low allocation stemming from gas shortages to the generating companies.

“Please be assured that we are working with all relevant stakeholders to restore normalcy within the shortest possible time. Once again, we ask that you kindly bear with us during this difficult time,” it said.
