The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to allow Muslims across Nigeria to celebrate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, which marks the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The announcement was made on Friday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
The holiday will give Muslim faithful and other Nigerians the opportunity to observe the occasion and take part in activities marking the birth of the Islamic prophet.
The minister extended greetings to Muslims in Nigeria and those living outside the country as they prepare for the celebration.
He called on citizens to use the occasion to reflect on values such as compassion, humility, peaceful living and service to others.
Tunji-Ojo also urged Nigerians to use the period to pray for peace and greater unity across the country.
He said peaceful coexistence and national unity require the contribution of citizens regardless of their religious or social background.
The minister appealed to Nigerians to celebrate the occasion responsibly and with respect for people of different beliefs. He also wished Muslim faithful a peaceful and joyful Eid ul Mawlid celebration.
He further assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remains committed to protecting lives and property and working towards maintaining peace across the country.
