House of Assembly leader resigns
The Majority Leader of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Saleh Hodi, has resigned from the legislature to pursue his ambition of becoming chairman of Shira Local Government Area in the forthcoming local government election.
Hodi, who represents Disina Constituency, submitted his resignation after securing the ticket of the Allied People’s Movement to contest the chairmanship position.
His resignation was announced by the Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Abubakar Sulaiman, during the lawmakers’ plenary session in Bauchi on Wednesday.
The Speaker informed members that the House had received an official letter from Hodi notifying them of his decision to leave the assembly.
His resignation brings an end to his tenure as the representative of Disina Constituency, a position he had occupied since his election into the House in 2019.
Hodi’s decision came after the Allied People’s Movement selected him as its candidate for the Shira Local Government chairmanship election.
His move now places him in the race for the local government seat ahead of the poll scheduled to take place across Bauchi State.
During his farewell address, Hodi expressed appreciation to the Speaker, his colleagues and other members of the assembly for the support and cooperation he received during his time in the legislature.
He also thanked residents of Disina Constituency and political stakeholders in Shira Local Government for trusting him and supporting his emergence as the party’s candidate.
The former Majority Leader described his years in the assembly as an important period in his political career, saying he was grateful for the chance to represent his constituents and contribute to the development of the state.
Following his departure, the assembly appointed Auwal Yana, who represents the constituency, as the new Majority Leader.
The Speaker said the replacement followed a decision reached by the executive council of the Allied People’s Movement after Hodi’s resignation.
Sulaiman also praised the former majority leader for his service to the House, noting that they had worked together across the ninth and 10th assemblies.
Other lawmakers joined the Speaker in wishing Hodi success as he begins his campaign for the local government chairmanship.
Yana, while accepting his new position, thanked God, political stakeholders and the state governor for giving him the opportunity to serve as one of the principal officers of the assembly.
The Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission has fixed August 17, 2026, for the local government elections in the state.
The commission is expected to conduct chairmanship elections in 19 of Bauchi State’s 20 local government areas, while councillorship elections will take place across all 20 local governments.
