The House of Representatives has denied seeking bribes from cryptocurrency firm Binance after its CEO Richard Teng made the accusation on Tuesday via a blog post.
The CEO said that Binance employees were approached after a meeting at the National Assembly Complex to pay a huge sum in cryptocurrency to make the issues disappear.
The House Committee on Financial Crimes, chaired by Ginger Onwusibe (LP, Abia), was accused of being the ones demanding the sums.
“As our employees were leaving the venue, they were approached by unknown persons who suggested to them to make a payment in settlement of the allegations,” Mr Teng wrote.
During resumption of plenary on Wednesday, lawmaker Kama NkemKanma said the allegations were made to disgrace the house.
Upon resumption of plenary on Wednesday, a member, Kama NkemKanma raised an order of privilege, stating that the claim by Binance CEO is an attempt to embarrass the House.
The Speaker of the house Tajudeen Abbass concured with the statement and directed the clerk of the house, Yahaya Danzaria, to use “media available to us refute this allegation”.
“Nothing like that has ever happened. No committee of the House has ever engaged this man,” he said.
