Former President Goodluck Jonathan is preparing to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
A senior figure in his circle told Vanguard that the decision followed wide consultations on the best political platform for his return.
The aim, according to the source, is to offer leadership that can respond to the current economic hardship and poverty in the country.
After word spread that Jonathan may run under the PDP, several support groups quickly began competing to raise funds for his presidential nomination form, which is priced at about N100 million.
The deadline for submission of the form is said to be Tuesday, creating urgency among his supporters.
Different groups have already stepped forward with plans to purchase the form on his behalf.
They include diaspora supporters, northern-based coalitions, youth movements, and online campaign networks.
Some of them say they represent wider national interests and want to be the ones to secure the nomination form before the deadline.
Among the groups are movements linked to northern Nigeria and others operating as online support platforms. Each of them has reportedly pledged to raise the required funds to ensure Jonathan enters the race.
Although Jonathan has not made a formal public declaration, people close to him say he has largely settled on contesting.
He is said to believe that a return to office would give him another chance to address economic challenges and improve living conditions in the country.
There has also been internal discussion about his political platform, but party officials have indicated that he has already met basic requirements to associate with the PDP, including registration earlier in the year.
This has reduced doubts within the party about his membership status.
At the same time, Jonathan has approached a Federal High Court in Abuja to respond to a legal challenge questioning his eligibility to run again, based on claims about the number of terms he has served.
The court process is expected to determine whether he can legally enter the 2027 contest.
