Key decisions taken by Tinubu at FEC meeting

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday presided over the Federal Executive Council meeting at the Aso Rock villa.

The meeting had in attendance Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; as well as other members of the Council.

Below are the highlights of the meeting:

– New Policy To Reduce Strikes

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) adopted the 2025 National Industrial Relations Policy to improve how the government handles labour matters.

The goal is to reduce industrial actions by promoting early resolution of disputes and better communication with trade unions and workers.

The new policy is expected to help the government avoid disruptions in important sectors like education and healthcare, where strikes have often affected operations.

– ₦987bn For Airport Upgrades

A total of ₦987 billion was approved for major aviation projects across the country.

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos will get a full overhaul of Terminal One, which will be stripped down and rebuilt with new electrical and mechanical systems.

Terminal Two will be expanded to include a new apron, bridges, and access roads.

In Kano and Port Harcourt, the runways and taxiways will be upgraded, along with new lighting systems that allow safer flights in poor weather.

Lagos airport will also have a 14.6-kilometre perimeter fence with CCTV, patrol roads, and solar lights for better security.

The government also approved a 30-year concession for Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu to allow private management.

– Oncology Centre For UCH Ibadan

In the health sector, the Council approved the upgrade of the Oncology Centre at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

The centre will be equipped with modern cancer treatment machines, including radiotherapy tools and linear accelerators.

This move is part of the government’s effort to provide advanced medical services within the country, following similar projects in Enugu, Katsina, and Jos.

– ₦213.7bn Power Projects For Universities And Rural Areas

To improve power supply in education and rural sectors, ₦213.7 billion was approved for new electrification projects.

The Energizing Education Programme will provide stable electricity to eight universities and a teaching hospital.

Benefiting institutions include the University of Lagos, Ahmadu Bello University, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Nigeria Nsukka, University of Ibadan, and Federal Universities in Dutse and Wukari.

Another part of the project will use solar energy to support farming and small businesses in underserved rural communities.

– Reconstruction And New Road Projects

The Council confirmed that work has started on the collapsed Keffi flyover in Nasarawa State, where three people died earlier in July.

The affected families have been settled, and one lane of the bridge has been closed for urgent repairs.

Several major road and bridge projects were also approved or reviewed.

These include the Abuja–Kano highway, Enugu–Onitsha road, Akure–Ado-Ekiti road, Lagos–Calabar coastal highway, and the Trans-Saharan route from Oyo to the Benue border.

According to the Minister of Works, many of these projects have already received funding and are at different levels of completion.

‘Tinubu Reportedly Orders Appointees With Political Ambition To Resign’

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has reportedly directed political appointees with 2027 political ambitions to start preparing to resign.

A reliable source said on Thursday that the President gave the directive to avoid any conflict of interest and ensure a smooth focus on governance as preparations for the next election cycle gradually begin.

The presidency has not released an official statement on the matter.
