The Lagos High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square has sentenced suspended Assistant Superintendent of Police, Drambi Vandi, to death by hanging.

Vandi had been charged with the murder of Lagos-based lawyer, Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem on Christmas day in 2022.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Ibironke Harrison, came after she found Vandi guilty of the heinous crime, asserting that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Harrison noted the particularly damning detail that Vandi had shot the pregnant lawyer at close range.

This development followed the court’s decision in April to dismiss a “no case submission” filed by Vandi.

At the time, Vandi had sought to have the suit against him dismissed, claiming that he had no case to answer.

His defense counsel, Adetokunbo Odutola, had argued various points, including the absence of eyewitnesses who saw the defendant shoot and the ballistic report that supposedly did not link the bullet to any of the firearms found at the scene.

Additionally, they highlighted discrepancies regarding the location of the gunshot wound.

However, the prosecution, led by Lagos State Attorney General Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), vehemently countered these arguments and successfully maintained that their case against Vandi was sound.

As a result, Justice Harrison ordered the defendant to open his defense, as a “prima facie” case had indeed been established against him.
