A Nigerian Air Force plane marked NAF 970 has crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The aircraft, an ATR-42, was reportedly on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when the crash occurred in the early hours of Monday, October 5, 2026.
The Nigerian Air Force confirmed that the aircraft belonged to the military and said a search and rescue operation had been launched following the accident.
The crash occurred in a swampy area of Igbokoda, with residents reporting that they heard a loud sound from the direction of the crash site.
The difficult terrain reportedly made it difficult for residents to reach the location, while security personnel and emergency responders moved to the area to begin rescue efforts.
The Ondo State Police Command had earlier confirmed the aircraft crash and said details surrounding the incident were still emerging.
The number of people on board the aircraft and the extent of casualties had not been officially confirmed as of the time of filing the report.
The Air Force said the search and rescue operation was being carried out in coordination with relevant authorities and emergency response agencies.
Further details are expected as the rescue operation continues and authorities establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
