The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has made it clear that excuses for poor performance in the power sector will no longer be accepted.
This statement comes a day after the Federal Executive Council approved a new roadmap for the power sector.
With the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) struggling to meet public expectations and the government pushing for a higher electricity tariff, the Ministry has introduced an urgent 10-year plan to address the critical shortage of skilled workers in the electricity sector.
The plan includes the training of at least 1,200 electrical engineers over the next decade and states prioritizing local contractors under a strict “Nigeria First” procurement policy.
Adelabu, speaking at the Ministry of Power’s management retreat in Abuja, stressed that the administration of President Bola Tinubu would not tolerate excuses when it comes to providing stable power to homes and businesses.
He described the revival of the power sector as essential for the country’s economic survival.
The Minister also mentioned that an executive order is being drafted, which will require ministries and agencies to award contracts to local firms and invest in home-grown expertise.
He spoke on the urgent need to replace the lost generation of engineers over the next ten years.
Adelabu added that the sector’s future could not continue to rely on outsourcing, especially given the critical shortage of skilled professionals.
He also acknowledged some recent improvements in grid stability since January 2025 but called for even faster progress.
He revealed that all ministry performance would now be monitored on a quarterly basis by the presidential monitoring unit.
Adelabu urged staff to ignore negativity and focus on showing tangible results to the public, who have become skeptical due to years of unfulfilled promises.
Permanent Secretary Mahmuda Mamman also addressed the staff, stressing that promotions would now be linked to measurable outcomes.
He reminded them that the public would judge their success based on real results, not presentations.
