Nigerian governor declares public holiday
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has declared Friday, August 14, 2026, a work-free day for public workers in the state ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
The decision was announced through a circular issued by the state Head of Service, Elder Ayanleye Aina, as part of arrangements to allow workers to prepare for the election.
The government said the holiday would give workers who need to travel enough time to return to their areas of registration and take part in the voting process.
The declaration covers public servants across the state, but workers handling emergency and other essential services are excluded from the arrangement.
The governor also called on workers, their family members, friends and other residents to participate actively in the election and ensure that their votes are protected.
Adeleke made the appeal in a message to workers before the poll, while thanking organised labour and civil servants for their support since the beginning of his administration.
He said the relationship between his government and workers had produced benefits for both sides and urged public servants to encourage other groups, including artisans, informal workers and professional bodies, to participate in the election.
The governor further asked residents to remain committed to exercising their constitutional rights during the poll.
He said the election was an opportunity for the people of Osun to decide whether to continue with the policies and projects introduced by his administration.
Adeleke also appealed to voters to support what he described as the achievements recorded by his government during the past three and a half years.
He said his administration had focused on the welfare of workers and development across the state and urged residents to protect the progress already made.
