The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has demanded a new national minimum wage of N500,000, saying anything below that amount cannot meet the needs of Nigerian workers amid rising living costs.
The union made the demand during the Rights of Workers Summit held in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday. NLC President Joe Ajaero, represented by Deputy President Audu Titus Amba, said the current N70,000 minimum wage has become inadequate and is due for review.
Ajaero said the labour body would soon begin discussions with the Federal Government on a new wage structure, adding that workers should prepare for fresh negotiations.
He said, “Anything less than N500,000 cannot cater for workers. The current minimum wage is due for review, and we will soon begin negotiations with the government.”
Ajaero said the present minimum wage has lost value due to the rising cost of living, inflation and the difficulties many workers face in meeting their daily needs.
He stated that the union believes a much higher wage is needed to provide better living conditions for workers.
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) also raised concerns over the economic pressure facing employees across the country.
The TUC President, Festus Osifo, represented by Secretary-General Nuhu Toro, said increased prices of food, transportation, housing and other essentials have reduced the ability of workers to afford basic needs.
The union called on employers to follow labour regulations and provide better salaries and welfare packages for their staff. It added that workers deserve fair treatment and conditions that allow them to live decently.
Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, who attended the summit, expressed support for improved wages for Nigerian workers. He said government and labour groups must work together to improve workers’ welfare.
The governor added that he would support discussions through the Nigeria Governors’ Forum aimed at achieving better remuneration for workers across the country.
