NLC set to begin nationwide strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, (TUC) have declared readiness to embark on an industrial action if the Federal Government fail to reverse the hike in electricity tariff and conclude the minimum wage by May 31.

In a joint communique issued today leaders of the organized labour, gave the federal government and National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, month ending to reverse the hike.

This came as they reiterated their May 31 ultimatum for government to conclude the new minimum wage or face a national strike.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage, Alhaji Bukar Goni, today indicated in a letter of invitation to labour leaders that negotiations will continue on Tuesday (Tomorrow) regarding the minimum wage.

His letter came 24 hours after the leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress walked out on the minimum wage negotiation committee after the Federal Government offered to pay N48,000 as the new minimum wage.

The National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, said workers will not accept even 100,000.

He insisted on N615,000 minimum wage, arguing that the amount was arrived at after an analysis of the current economic situation and the needs of an average Nigerian family of six.
