The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has warned the NDC’s 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to apologise to airport officials and pay a N25,000 fine over the clamping of his vehicle at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Keyamo via his official X account, said Obi has one week to comply or face further action by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
The minister’s statement comes days after Obi alleged that his vehicle was unjustly clamped at the airport as part of what he described as a pattern of harassment by the Federal Government.
Obi had also claimed that the alleged intimidation had become so severe that he was uncertain he would be alive to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Responding, Keyamo said he ordered an internal investigation into the incident and reviewed CCTV footage from the airport.
According to him, the footage showed that on July 4, 2026, Obi’s vehicle was left unattended for about 30 minutes in a designated drop-off zone after his police driver entered the terminal, creating what he described as a security risk.
He said airport officials clamped the vehicle without knowing it belonged to Obi, adding that the vehicle was later released after the former Anambra State governor spoke to the airport manager over the phone.
Keyamo alleged that Obi used his influence to secure the vehicle’s release without paying the required fine.
He accused the former presidential candidate of attempting to “whip up unnecessary sentiments” by portraying the incident as political persecution.
“The vehicle was parked unattended to in that prohibited zone for about 30 minutes, which constitutes a security risk at an airport by global best practices,” the minister said.
He demanded that Obi “tenders an unreserved, public apology” to airport workers and “voluntarily goes back to the airport and pay the appropriate fine of N25,000 for wrongful parking.”
“If these demands are not met within one week, I will be giving the necessary directives to the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to take the next steps against him,” Keyamo added.
