On Thursday, gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen, ambushed a commercial bus transporting students from Rivers State University and Ignatius Ajuru University of Education.
The students, who were on their way to the Babcock University Annual GYC Africa Conference, were attacked while traveling along Ore Road in Edo State.
The gunmen opened fire on the bus without warning, causing panic among the students.
Ten students were abducted, two were shot, and the rest scattered into nearby forests, with some reported missing or injured.
Authorities later confirmed the abduction and launched a police operation to rescue the students.
According to a statement from the Edo State Police Command, the operation resulted in the rescue of the ten students, consisting of eight males and two females.
During the operation, one kidnapper was killed, and others fled with gunshot wounds.
An Inspector of Police also sustained injuries during the gunfight and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Edo State Police Commissioner, Monday Agbonika, warned criminals in the state that there would be no safe haven for them and urged them to repent or face severe consequences.
