The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has revealed the actual salaries of Nigeria’s President and state governors.
According to the commission, the President receives ₦1,171,568 monthly, which totals ₦14,058,820 annually.
State governors earn ₦648,581 monthly, or ₦7,782,968 per year.
These figures have remained unchanged since 2007.
The commission also stated that the idea of political leaders receiving extremely high pay is false.
In fact, it explained that some federal civil servants, especially those working in government financial institutions like the Central Bank of Nigeria, receive higher salaries than ministers and lawmakers.
While the President’s basic salary is below ₦1.5 million monthly, the position comes with multiple allowances and benefits, such as hardship allowance (₦146,446), consistency allowance (₦732,230), and others tied to responsibilities, travel, and living expenses.
In total, Nigeria’s President is entitled to at least 18 different allowances, covering items like housing, domestic staff, security, medicals, and estacodes.
These perks significantly boost the value of the office but are often misunderstood as direct salaries.
Since assuming office in May 2023, Tinubu has traveled to at least 17 countries, with government-funded expenses covering flights, accommodation, and security.
According to Sahara Reporters, over ₦36.3 billion was spent on international travel in 2024 alone, with local transport costs also running into billions.
