Speaker, Aide die in road crash in Abuja
The Speaker of the Gwagwalada Area Council Legislative Arm, Hon. Mohammed Ibrahim Ibwa, and his aide, Ibrahim Ibwa, have lost their lives after a serious road accident along the Abuja-Lokoja highway near Sheda village.
Reports say the crash happened on Wednesday afternoon around 3:10 p.m. when a Mercedes-Benz car and a Sino truck collided head-on.
Three people were in the car at the time of the accident. One of them is still receiving treatment in the hospital.
The aide reportedly died at the scene, while the Speaker was first taken to Legend Hospital in Gwagwalada before being moved to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, where he later died in the early hours of Thursday.
Officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident and said rescue teams moved victims to nearby hospitals.
One person was confirmed dead at the scene, while the others were taken for medical care. The body of one of the victims was later deposited at the mortuary in Gwagwalada.
The Speaker and his aides were returning to Gwagwalada from Kwali after a political meeting when the accident occurred near Sheda village.
The late Speaker was buried according to Islamic rites in his hometown, Ibwa community in Gwagwalada Area Council.
The burial was attended by political leaders, including the chairman-elect of Gwagwalada Area Council, former council officials, and other stakeholders.
Senator Philip Aduda, who is contesting for the FCT APC senatorial ticket, visited the bereaved family to offer condolences.
He described the deaths as painful and said the Speaker served his people with dedication and humility. He also prayed for the families of the deceased and urged them to stay strong during the period of mourning.
