Speaker Declares Rep Seat Vacant

The Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, announced that the seat for the Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North federal constituency in Ogun State is officially vacant.

This follows the death of former Deputy Chief Whip, Adewunmi Onanuga, who passed away on January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.

The declaration aligns with Section 68(2) of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.

With this seat now empty, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to schedule by-elections to fill all vacant seats in both state and national assemblies.

Currently, five seats in the House are unoccupied four due to lawmakers’ deaths, and one because Dennis Idahosa, the representative of Oredo Federal Constituency in Edo State, has become the state’s deputy governor.
