State government official electrocuted to death


The permanent secretary of the Ministry of Special Duties in Gombe State, Mohammed Yusuf Kulani, has been electrocuted to death.

He was among eight people who lost their lives when a strong electricity surge hit the Tudun Wada Pantami area of Gombe metropolis on Friday night, June 13, 2025.

The power was restored after an outage, but it returned with a dangerous voltage that caused electric wires to snap and fall.

Witnesses said the light first came back weak, then suddenly became very strong.

The high-voltage surge led to sparks and made the cables break, electrocuting those nearby.

Five of the victims were confirmed dead on the spot and rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.

Three more later died in the hospital as a result of the injuries they suffered.

Security officers from the Low-cost Divisional Police Headquarters visited the scene shortly after the incident to keep the area safe and assist with moving the injured.

The police confirmed five deaths and 13 injuries, though the total number of deaths later rose to eight, according to sources close to the victims.

The community has been thrown into mourning as families and friends of the deceased try to come to terms with the tragic loss.
