He became the Emir of Gumel in December 1980 after the death of his father, who previously occupied the traditional stool.

Before becoming emir, Muhammad Sani had worked in public service and was involved in politics.

He served with the Nigeria Immigration Service and later became a commissioner in the old Kano State government.

During his time as commissioner, he was involved in the development of media organisations in the state, including The Triumph newspaper and what was then CTV67 television station.

His death came just four days after the passing of the Emir of Zurmi in Zamfara State, Alhaji Bello Sulaiman.

The Emir of Zurmi died on Monday, August 31, at the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau, Zamfara State.

He had occupied the traditional stool for about five years.

His death led to condolences from political leaders and residents of Zamfara State, with tributes pouring in for the late monarch.

Before the death of the two northern monarchs, another traditional ruler had passed away in Kogi State.

Oba Jacob Babatunde Meduteni, the Eleta Oluyara of Iyara Land in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, died in the early hours of Sunday, August 30.

The second-class monarch reportedly died peacefully in his palace after battling an undisclosed illness for a prolonged period.

He was 75 years old.

Oba Meduteni became the Eleta Oluyara of Iyara Land in 2023 after his appointment by the Kogi State Government.

The traditional stool was later upgraded from third-class to second-class status.
