The Nigerian Presidency has publicly apologized after an embarrassing mistake was made during President Bola Tinubu’s Democracy Day speech.
In his nationally televised address, the President honoured various heroes of democracy however, two respected figures, Pa Reuben Fasoranti and Dr. Edwin Madunagu, were wrongly listed under the “posthumous” category, implying they were deceased.
This error quickly caught public attention, prompting confusion and criticism online. Fasoranti, a prominent Afenifere leader, and Madunagu, a veteran activist and journalist, are both very much alive.
Following the backlash, Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, issued a statement acknowledging the mistake.
He described the inclusion of the two names under posthumous awards as an “oversight,” adding that steps are already being taken to correct the blunder on all official State House platforms.
“We sincerely regret this oversight,” the statement read, reassuring Nigerians that updated and accurate information would soon be published.
