Tinubu speaks on renaming Nigeria

The Presidency has dismissed reports claiming that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to change Nigeria’s name to the United States of Nigeria and stop the use of Sharia law in the North.

In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency described the viral report as false and misleading.

According to the statement, there is no plan by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sponsor any constitutional amendment seeking to rename the country or abolish Sharia law in the northern region.

The Presidency said the story was created by unnamed individuals trying to cause tension in the country and create confusion ahead of the 2027 general elections.

It added that the report was designed to stir political problems and mislead Nigerians.

The statement also denied claims that the President intends to send a proposed bill called Project True Federation to the National Assembly before the elections.

The Presidency explained that constitutional amendments in Nigeria cannot be carried out casually because the process involves serious debates and approvals.

It stated that any constitutional change must pass through both chambers of the National Assembly and also receive support from at least 24 state Houses of Assembly before it can become law.

The statement further said President Tinubu is currently focused on his administration’s economic reforms and governance programmes aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.

The Presidency warned citizens to be careful about fake reports and divisive stories, especially as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections continue to increase.
