Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Bola Tinubu, Aliyu Audu has resigned from his position.
Audu cited worries about the growing threat of one-party rule in the country, Daily Post reports.
The aide, who occupied the role, submitted his resignation on June 8, 2025, through the office of the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
Audu explained that his decision to step down was not driven by anger or rebellion but by a sense of duty and personal conviction.
He said he could no longer serve in a system that appears to be edging towards silencing opposition and turning Nigeria into a political space dominated by one voice.
Although he made it clear that he is not a member of the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he insisted he could not be used in any way—directly or indirectly—to contribute to the fall of democratic competition.
According to him, democracy should create room for various ideas and fair competition, not shut out other political views.
He warned that if the ruling party continues to crush dissent voices simply because it has the upper hand, it risks becoming the kind of system it once criticized.
He called such a direction not only politically unwise but also morally wrong.
He argued that forcing a single political line of thought goes against the idea of freedom and choice.
In his view, true growth for Nigeria will come when people are allowed to share different ideas, offer various visions, and compete with integrity.
Despite his departure, Audu said he still supports the government in power due to the progress made in economic reforms.
