A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has voiced concerns that President Bola Tinubu may not contest in the 2027 presidential election.
Eze, an ally of former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, said the next election may bring surprises, especially if the United States releases documents relating to an alleged drug investigation involving President Bola Tinubu dating back to the 1990s.
Eze explained that the current administration has been more focused on trying to hold onto power rather than addressing the growing troubles facing the country.
He pointed to issues such as a struggling economy, widespread hunger, insecurity, and ongoing violent attacks, saying these problems should be a major worry for any government.
He also noted that despite these difficulties, there are efforts from the presidency to secure a second term by any means, which, in his view, is not in line with true leadership or democracy.
He added that Tinubu may not even get the chance to run again if the documents come to light.
“2027 will be full of surprises, Tinubu may not be in a position to even stand the election he plans to manipulate if the US lives to her billing and releases the alleged file on Mr. President.
“Ordinarily, the failure of his government which stares us all in our faces inhibits the president to think of reelection,” he told Daily Post.
On a related front, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have asked a United States District Court for a 90-day extension to produce the documents linked to an alleged drug investigation involving Tinubu from the 1990s.
This case comes from a series of Freedom of Information Act requests by Aaron Greenspan, an American legal transparency advocate and founder of the platform PlainSite.
Greenspan is seeking records tied to a Chicago-based drug ring and has named Tinubu alongside three others: Lee Andrew Edwards, Mueez Abegboyega Akande, and Abiodun Agbele.
The court, led by Judge Beryl Howell, had earlier ordered the FBI and DEA to give a status update on the search and release of non-exempt documents by May 2, 2025.
However, in their latest filing, the agencies said they need more time to finish the searches.
Greenspan opposed the delay, arguing that the agencies have dragged the process for years and that some records have already been identified, Punch reports.
While the agencies proposed a new deadline of July 31, Greenspan has asked the court to set it for May 31, 2025.
