2027: Peter Obi makes new appointment
Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has appointed Yunusa Tanko as his Political Adviser for Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Tanko accepted the appointment after stepping down as the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, a position he held for two years.
He announced the development in a statement shared on his X account on Wednesday, saying his new role would focus on political engagement, mobilisation and coordination across Northern Nigeria.
Tanko’s appointment means he will now work with political structures, stakeholders, communities and supporters across the region as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
During his time as National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Tanko said the group expanded its structures across the country and strengthened its regional and grassroots coordination.
Among the initiatives recorded during his tenure were the establishment of a National Advisory Council, the development of regional coordination structures and the expansion of grassroots networks.
The movement also developed Obidient.com, an online platform for mobilisation, as well as an election-results monitoring system connected to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s results-viewing platform.
With his new responsibility requiring his attention across Northern Nigeria, Tanko announced that Dr Moses Paul, popularly known as Dr Mo, would succeed him as the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement.
Paul has been part of the movement since its early days and has been involved in civic engagement, grassroots mobilisation and communication.
Tanko urged leaders, coordinators, volunteers and supporters of the movement to work with Paul as he takes over the national coordination role.
He also thanked Obi and members of the movement for their support during his two-year tenure.
Tanko said the structures built during his time as national coordinator would provide a foundation for his new assignment in Northern Nigeria as the political activities leading to the 2027 general elections gather pace.
