NDC chairman killed

The chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Fiidi Council Ward, Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State, Igbu Terhemen, has been killed by suspected hoodlums.

Terhemen was reportedly attacked on Tuesday evening and later found unconscious in a bush close to his residence around the NNPC Depot area, along the Makurdi-Otukpo Road.

Sources said the politician had left his home on Tuesday evening to watch a local football match around the Kanshio area of Makurdi. He was expected to return home afterwards but did not show up.

His disappearance reportedly raised concern among his relatives and friends, who began searching for him. He was eventually found at about 2am on Wednesday in a bush close to his residence.

Terhemen was said to have been unconscious when he was discovered and was unable to communicate with those who found him. He reportedly died before he could receive medical treatment.

Sources also claimed that his attackers did not take his mobile phone, which was reportedly found on him when his body was taken to the morgue.

There was also an injury on his body that appeared to have been caused by a needle or similar object. The circumstances surrounding the injury have not been established, while claims that he may have been injected with a substance remain subject to police investigation.

The Benue State chapter of the NDC condemned the killing and called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of its ward chairman.

The party said Terhemen was an active member who had contributed to its activities in the state before his death.

The state chairman of the party, Ohini Ojegbe, also called on security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure that anyone found to be involved faces justice.

However, the Benue State Police Command said it had not received an official report concerning the incident as of Wednesday.

The police spokesperson, DSP Peter Aondongu, stated that the command was yet to receive information about the reported killing.

The circumstances leading to Terhemen’s death remain unclear as questions surrounding the alleged attack, the injury found on his body and how he ended up in the bush are expected to form part of any investigation by security authorities.
