The Young Progressives Party (YPP) presidential candidate Anita Zugwai-Chukwu has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential race because of concerns from her family over the security situation across parts of Nigeria.
Former Labour Party presidential aspirant Peter Agada has now emerged as the new YPP presidential candidate.
Agada was presented alongside Ndidi Keys, who was selected as his running mate.
The party made this known on Monday in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Egbeola Wale-Martins.
According to the YPP, Chukwu officially informed the party leadership of her decision in a letter dated August 12, 2026.
The party said her decision came after discussions with members of her immediate and extended family.
Chukwu had emerged as the YPP presidential candidate during the party’s third Elective National Convention and Presidential Primary held on May 30, 2026.
After her withdrawal, the party said it attempted to find another qualified female aspirant to take over the ticket but could not complete the process.
This resulted in the decision to conduct a fresh presidential substitution primary.
The substitution primary was held in Abuja on Friday, August 21, 2026, and produced Peter Agada as the party’s new presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
The YPP said it maintained its requirements for competence, character, capacity and commitment while searching for a replacement.
The party added that Chukwu remained an important member and that her withdrawal did not affect her position or contributions to the party.
