65-year-old fake lawyer sentenced to 3 years in prison


An Aba South Magistrate’s Court has sentenced 65-year-old Iheanacho Emenike to three years in prison for impersonating a lawyer, obtaining N500,000 by false pretence and using a purported Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) seal.

Emenike pleaded guilty to the three charges before Magistrate Erinma Maduagwu at the court.

According to the prosecution, Emenike presented himself as “E.U. Iheanacho Esq.” and collected N500,000 from Onuoha Chinasa after claiming he would prepare an Irrevocable Power of Attorney for her.

He was also accused of using a purported NBA seal bearing number SCN076872 as genuine. The offences were allegedly committed in June 2026 at Ukonu Street, Aba.

The court sentenced him to one year on the first count, two years on the second and three years on the third. The sentences will run concurrently, making three years his effective prison term, with no option of a fine.

The conviction was announced by the NBA Aba Branch Anti-Fake Lawyers Committee, which described it as a significant step towards protecting the integrity of the legal profession.

The committee’s Chairman, Uchenna Ejiogu, thanked members of the committee and the branch for their support during the proceedings.

The prosecution was conducted by U.E. Emmanuel, Legal Officer, Area Command, Aba.
