Security officers have reportedly fired tear gas canisters to disperse protesters at the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanu protest happening in Abuja.
This occurred on Monday where human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, and other prominent figures had kicked off the protest near the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.
The protesters had gathered to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Armed police officers positioned around the hotel and nearby streets moved in and dispersed the crowd using tear gas.
Those at the scene, including clergymen and members of civil society groups, were singing solidarity songs before the security agents intervened.
The demonstration, led by Sowore and several pro-democracy groups, was set for Monday, October 20, 2025. Protesters had vowed to march to the Presidential Villa to press for Kanu’s release.
Recall the Nigeria Police Force issued a statement on Sunday, advising organisers to avoid restricted areas and maintain peace. Despite the warning, organisers vowed to proceed, accusing President Bola Tinubu’s administration of disobeying court orders and disregarding the rule of law.
