At least ten people have reportedly lost their lives in a fatal truck accident that occurred in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State.
Dockaysworld gathered that the incident happened when a truck loaded with cement lost control and crashed into shops along the Owo–Akungba–Ikare expressway near the main gate of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA). The victims were said to have died on the spot.
The Ondo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Samuel Ibitoye, confirmed the crash, noting that preliminary investigations showed the truck suffered brake failure before ramming into the barricade in front of the university gate. He said eight bodies, including two females and a male child, had been recovered so far.
Reports circulating on social media allege that the truck involved belonged to the Dangote Group. The company’s trucks have previously been the subject of public concern and debate, with many Nigerians accusing them of frequent involvement in fatal road accidents across different states. However, authorities have yet to confirm whether the vehicle in question was owned by Dangote Industries.
Speaking on the tragedy, the Public Relations Officer of the AAUA Student Union Government, Akinibobola Ajidagba, said, “We regret to inform the entirety of the student populace that an articulated vehicle belonging to the Dangote group of companies suffered a brake failure from Ikare en route to Akungba and has destroyed by accident the permanent barricade erected at the university main gate. As it stands, close to 10 people have lost their lives due to this tragic incident.”
He added that the student union had repeatedly called for heavy-duty trucks to be restricted from using the Akungba road, citing the danger they pose to the university community.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue of the government hospital in the area.
