Police reveals reason for arresting Sowore

The Nigeria Police Force has given the rationale for the arrest of activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, on Thursday.

They disclosed that the arrest was carried out to ensure fairness in the prosecution of those involved in Monday’s protest in Abuja.

Recall Dockaysworld reported that Sowore was earlier arrested at the Federal High Court in Abuja shortly after attending proceedings in solidarity with detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, days after leading a protest demanding Kanu’s release.

Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this on Thursday while addressing journalists in the capital, noting that Sowore allegedly led protesters into a restricted area during the demonstration.

Hundeyin said it would be unjust to charge the demonstrators to court without also holding their leader accountable. “If we move ahead to prosecute some people and leave out the person who led them into the restricted area, that wouldn’t be fair. In the spirit of justice, Sowore was arrested to ensure everyone faces the law equally,” he stated.

He added that Sowore would not be detained beyond the lawful period and was expected to be arraigned later the same day. “Like the others, he won’t spend up to 24 hours with us. Once we conclude the process, he’ll be prosecuted immediately,” the police spokesman said.
