The 2023 presidential candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Justice Peter Umeadi, has resigned from the party and announced his decision to step away from active politics in Nigeria.
In a letter dated October 24, and addressed to the Chairman of APGA Ward 1, Nri, in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, Umeadi expressed gratitude to the party for allowing him to contest under its platform during the 2023 presidential election.
He stated that his resignation from APGA and withdrawal from all political activities would take effect immediately.
Justice Umeadi, a former Chief Judge of Anambra State, made history as the first jurist and law scholar to contest for the Nigerian presidency under a major political party.
His 2023 campaign was centered on justice, fairness, and institutional reforms, promoting a vision of equality and progress for all citizens.
He joined APGA in March 2019 and secured the party’s presidential ticket in June 2022.
His emergence was viewed as a major step for professionals in the legal sector venturing into politics.
Born on July 4, 1955, Umeadi served as Chief Judge of Anambra State from 2011 to 2019.
He is also a Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, a Life Bencher, a Patron of the Anambra Book and Creativity Network (ANBUKRAFT), and a member of the World Jurist Association.
