The Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Constitution Review has approved the creation of an additional state in Nigeria’s South-East region.
The decision was made during a two-day retreat in Lagos, where lawmakers reviewed 55 separate requests for state creation across the country.
The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, alongside the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.
The lawmakers agreed that creating a new state in the South-East would promote fairness and balance in the country’s political structure.
Currently, the South-East remains the only geo-political zone with five states — Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo — while others have six or more.
The North-West, for instance, has seven states.
A motion supporting the creation of a new state for the region was moved by Senator Abdul Ningi from Bauchi Central and seconded by Ibrahim Isiaka from Ogun State.
The proposal reportedly received unanimous approval from the committee members.
Since the creation of a new state for the South-East has been approved, lawmakers are likely to choose from the following proposed names that have been under consideration for years:
Orlu State (South-East) – proposed from Imo State and possibly parts of Anambra.
Anioma State (South-East) – proposed from the Igbo-speaking part of Delta State.
Etiti State (South-East) – proposed from parts of Imo, Abia, Anambra, and Enugu States.
Aba State (South-East) – proposed from Abia State.
Adada State (South-East) – proposed from Enugu State.
Creating states when the people of the country are underdeveloped with low income no good facilities and social amenities to enable the citizens to live a normal life
A normal person will know that creation of additional state will bring development to the area. More jobs and rapid infrastructural development will be boosted in the area.
