Rescue teams worked through the night in Oyingbo, Lagos, after a two-storey building collapsed in the early hours of Monday, trapping several occupants beneath the rubble.
Daily Trust reports that the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) said it received a distress call around 12:20 a.m. and immediately dispatched officers from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station.Â
The crew arrived at 12:29 a.m. to begin emergency operations, pulling victims out of the debris in a tense, hours-long effort.
According to LSFRS Controller General, Margaret Adeseye, fifteen people, including seven men, four women, and four children, have so far been rescued with various degrees of injury.
The victims were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta, and the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, for treatment.
The collapse occurred at No. 54, Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop by UBA Bank.
Witnesses described a sudden crash that jolted the neighbourhood awake, sending residents and passers-by rushing to help before official responders arrived.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the building had previously been marked as distressed but continued to be occupied until it finally gave way.
Adeseye said search and rescue efforts were still ongoing as emergency workers continued to comb through the wreckage.
She assured that the LSFRS, working with other agencies, remained fully mobilized to ensure that all trapped persons are accounted for.
