Former Minister Ngige sent to Kuje

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory on Friday ordered former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, to be sent to the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his bail application on Monday.

Recall Dockaysworld reported that the former Anambra state governor was arrested by the EFCC with an arraignment impending.

Ngige was arraigned on multiple corruption charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He pleaded not guilty to the eight-count charge, which includes allegations of conferring undue advantage on associates through contract awards during his tenure between 2015 and 2023, and receiving financial gifts running into tens of millions of naira through his organisations.

His bail application could not be heard because the EFCC received the filing shortly before proceedings.

His counsel, Patrick Ikweato (SAN), asked the court to grant temporary bail on health grounds, but EFCC lawyer Sylvanus Tahir (SAN) opposed it, arguing that the former minister posed a flight risk.

Justice Mariam Hassan adjourned the case to Monday, December 15, for the bail hearing.
